Why Does Technology Matter for People With Disabilities?

Since 2020, KenCrest has been at the forefront of Assistive Technology, transforming the lives of those with disabilities.

By Sydney Kerelo

At KenCrest, we believe in the power of technology to create meaningful change for the individuals we support. Every day, we see firsthand how assistive technology (AT) helps people with disabilities unlock their full potential, transforming their lives in ways that empower them to be more independent, confident, and engaged in the world around them.

What is Assistive Technology?

Assistive technology (AT) is any device or system designed to help individuals with disabilities perform tasks that might otherwise be difficult or impossible. From simple tools like magnifying glasses to complex systems like voice-activated assistants, these technologies break down barriers and provide a level of autonomy many thought unattainable.

For those with physical, sensory, cognitive, or communication impairments, AT offers hope—hope for independence, hope for a better future, and hope for a life where they have the tools they need to thrive.

Types of Assistive Technologies and Their Purposes

  1. Communication Devices: Tools such as speech-generating devices and communication boards assist individuals who have difficulty with verbal communication, enabling them to express their needs and interact with others.
  1. Mobility Aids: Equipment like wheelchairs (traditional and powered), walkers, and stair lifts support individuals with mobility impairments, facilitating movement and access to various environments.
  1. Environmental Control Systems: Smart home technologies, including voice assistants, smart lighting, and automated thermostats, allow users to control their living spaces independently and automate otherwise challenging processes.
  1. Educational Tools: Software applications and devices tailored for learning can aid individuals with cognitive disabilities in acquiring new skills and knowledge.
  1. Daily Living Aids: Items such as automated medication dispensers and adaptive kitchen tools assist in managing daily routines effectively.

How Assistive Technology Is Changing Lives at KenCrest

At KenCrest, the integration of assistive technology has significantly transformed the lives of those we support. For instance, one individual struggled with taking her medication on her own. She wouldn’t take it on time and would often lose her pills. At a time of crisis, KenCrest’s Enabling Technology team stepped in and got her an automated medicine dispenser that would distribute her pills at the right time every day, helping her easily take her medicine. This challenge prevented her from living independently, but now, with the medicine dispenser, she can live independently through our Supported Independent Living program

In another case, KenCrest's Project SEARCH team at Phoenixville Hospital utilized the LifeSherpa app to assist interns transitioning from school to the workforce. One intern, Vinny, faced challenges performing specific tasks in the hospital kitchen. Using LifeSherpa, a Skills Trainer created a step-by-step guide, enabling Vinny to master his responsibilities confidently.

KenCrest's Commitment to Expanding Assistive Technology Programs

KenCrest is committed to providing the best possible technology solutions for those we serve. Through our Enabling Technology department, we’re connecting individuals with tools that support their goals and dreams. From voice assistants to smart home devices, we continue introducing new technologies that make a difference.

In addition to providing technology, we’re training our staff in Delaware on the effective use of assistive technology to ensure they can support individuals in using these tools to their full potential. This ongoing investment in staff development means that we’re giving people the technology they need and the knowledgeable support to make the most of it.

As we look ahead, KenCrest remains committed to expanding its assistive technology initiatives. We aim to continue helping individuals with disabilities lead more independent, fulfilling lives by providing them with the tools they need to thrive. Assistive technology is more than just a tool—it’s a gateway to greater independence, confidence, and empowerment.
