For over 26 years, Kim Prendergast has dedicated herself to supporting countless families through her work at KenCrest. As a committed social worker and certified ABC (Attachment and Bio-behavioral Catch-Up) coach, Kim collaborates with parents on early intervention strategies that significantly benefit their child’s social-emotional development.
Kim's journey into social work began with a strong desire to support families. "I did know I wanted to work with families in some way," she recalls. Despite starting as an English major, Kim found her calling in social work, gaining on-the-job training and eventually pursuing a graduate degree in the field. Her dedication to helping others, especially families, has been unwavering, driven by a genuine love for the work and a commitment to making a difference.
Building Foundations for Learning
One key aspect of Kim's role at KenCrest is her involvement in the ABC program, an evidence-based home-visiting initiative designed to support social-emotional development in young children. “It’s a 10-week intervention where we videotape every session and use those clips to show parents and caregivers what a great job they do to support their children’s social-emotional development,” says Prendergast. This program has been instrumental in helping families build a healthy foundation for all learning, fostering sensitive and responsive interactions between caregivers and their children.
But Kim's work with KenCrest goes beyond the ABC program. As a social worker, she addresses many needs, from providing concrete resources like food and diapers to offering emotional support and connecting families to essential services. "I work with families in their homes, supporting them during a tender time of life when they have a new child who needs extra support," she says. This holistic approach ensures that families receive comprehensive care tailored to their unique circumstances.
Making a Difference, One Family at a Time
Throughout her career, Kim has witnessed countless moments of transformation and growth. She shares the story of a family she currently works with who have faced significant challenges, including trauma and poverty. "Seeing them become more positive and relaxed with their son, enjoying him more, and going out into the community with him has been incredibly rewarding," she reflects. Her ability to empower families and help them realize their strengths is a testament to her dedication and expertise.
Kim's exceptional work has not gone unnoticed. In September 2024, she was honored with the 24th Annual Points of Transformation Awards. This year’s theme was Dedicated, Superstars, Practitioners (DSPs): “Never Letting the ‘dis’ Outshine the Ability.” The DBHIDS Division of Intellectual Disability Services created this award to celebrate the accomplishments of those who have committed their careers to supporting people with intellectual disabilities. Those who receive this award exemplify the motto, “It’s All About Community!” and are models of excellence, compassion, commitment, growth, and achievement, which Kim demonstrates daily.
One of her favorite aspects of her work is helping families find moments of joy with their children. She often connects families to community resources like the Please Touch Museum, parks, and libraries.

"I love helping families feel empowered to go out with their child who might need extra support and to feel like those things belong to them too," she says. These experiences provide fun and enrichment and build confidence and a sense of belonging for both parents and children.
“But I couldn't do all of this without the teamwork and support from KenCrest," she emphasizes. The organization's collaborative approach and focus on positive outcomes create an environment where both staff and families can thrive.
Kim Prendergast's journey with KenCrest is a powerful example of the impact that dedicated professionals can have on the lives of families in need. Through her work in early intervention and social work, Kim has helped countless families build strong foundations for their children's development, empowering them to overcome challenges and find joy in their everyday lives. Her story is a testament to the importance of compassionate, holistic support in creating lasting positive change.
