Let Love Propel You Forward
I love what I do. While I know I get paid to do it, and I need to pay my bills like everyone else, I choose to do this work because of the joy it brings me, and the joy I hope to bring to others. It seems to me that there are many ways the Beatles were right when they sang Love is All You Need.
I recently met a parent who was challenged to turn love into work. We recently told her story at Community Champions. I was delighted to meet her and learn about her passions and her next challenge. I told her I imagined her as a board member one day. Parents of children supported in early intervention are amazing board members because they understand inclusion, and they get the everyday needs in very practical terms.
Let me tell you her story.
As a non-disabled parent to a child with a disability, Sana Garner saw first-hand that there weren’t enough opportunities in the community for her bright, wheel-chair-using son to explore his environment through play. Her son, Apollo, was born with Cerebral Palsy and uses alternate mobility methods to get around. So, she created a group called Creative Movers Playgroup to organize meetups at inclusive playgrounds in the area. Since she began this playgroup, Sana has seen her family’s world expand. She has made a space for children like her son to be able to play with their peers. Sana has also started exploring how she can advocate for her son, and other children who use alternate mobility methods, within the school district.
Sana has taken love to a new place. That is our mission too. To take the love we have for the people we support, the belief in authentic inclusion and make those dreams happen. We are so lucky to have Sana in our community to make love happen.
