Arnold Mickey, a CNA at St. Martha Center, was awarded KenCrest’s Community Champion award for his care of an individual with IDD.
On October 2, KenCrest was proud to recognize Arnold Mickey with the Community Champion Award for his exceptional support of Bob, an individual with an intellectual disability. Arnold, a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), worked with Bob during his stay at St. Martha Center for Rehabilitation & Healthcare in Downingtown, PA. In just three months, Arnold’s dedication and care left a lasting impression on Bob, his support team, and everyone who witnessed his compassionate work.
Building Trust Through Care
Bob, a nonverbal individual supported by KenCrest, met Arnold when he was newly admitted to St. Martha’s for rehabilitation. As someone who enjoys coloring, watching TV, and surrounding himself with genuine people, Bob tends to shy away from new environments and situations, especially when it comes to doctor’s visits. His bedroom at St. Martha’s became his sanctuary, and leaving it—particularly for medical appointments—was often a difficult and upsetting task.
Bob’s first appointment with an orthopedic doctor was unsuccessful because he was uncomfortable and uncooperative. The appointment had to be rescheduled, and Arnold was assigned to accompany Bob to the second attempt. On the appointment day, Arnold’s approach was nothing short of remarkable. His person-centered care stood out as he ensured Bob was dressed and prepared for the trip, all while respecting his needs.
Arnold knew that Bob found comfort in coloring, so while Bob brought his usual markers and pad, Arnold went a step further—he downloaded a coloring app on his personal iPad to provide Bob with even more options. This small gesture reflected Arnold’s dedication to making Bob feel secure and respected, even in unfamiliar settings.
Empathy in Action
Arnold’s patience and attentiveness helped Bob navigate the challenges of leaving his comfort zone. His compassionate approach and constant communication ensured that Bob felt safe and understood throughout the appointment, which was ultimately a success. It was clear to everyone involved that Arnold had formed a genuine connection with Bob.
During another visit, KenCrest’s Lifesharing staff saw Arnold’s dedication on full display once again. As he assisted Bob with his hygiene routine, Arnold involved him in the process—handing him the electric shaver so that Bob could shave himself, something he enjoyed doing. Rather than taking over, Arnold waited patiently for Bob to complete the task, offering positive feedback and encouragement along the way.
Arnold’s ability to involve Bob in his own care, fostering independence whenever possible, was a reflection of his deep understanding of Bob’s needs and desires. He wasn’t just providing physical care—he was giving Bob a sense of agency and respect that is essential in supporting individuals with disabilities.
A Champion of Compassion
Arnold’s dedication went far beyond the basic requirements of his job. His compassion, respect, and empathy transformed his relationship with Bob into something truly special. By the time Bob was discharged from St. Martha’s, Arnold had become an integral part of his care team, ensuring that Bob received the best possible support throughout his stay. His commitment to understanding Bob’s unique needs and providing care with dignity is what makes Arnold a Community Champion in every sense of the word.
Arnold Mickey’s work with Bob is a testament to the profound impact that person-centered care can have on the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. KenCrest is proud to celebrate Arnold’s hard work and the difference he made in Bob’s life. His compassionate, respectful approach serves as an inspiration to all.
Join us in congratulating Arnold Mickey on his well-deserved Community Champion award!
