KenCrest’s Enabling Technology empowers individuals with IDD to live independently at home and work through innovative solutions.

KenCrest, the second organization in Pennsylvania to receive the Tech First Shift Accreditation, is dedicated to integrating assistive technology to promote independence. Since February 2020, KenCrest’s Enabling Technology department has been connecting individuals in residential and community programs with innovative solutions to support their goals.

KenCrest offers a range of technologies to assist those they support, from voice assistants and chair lifts to video doorbells, tablets, and phone-based applications. Intelligent home technologies like smart bulbs, medication dispensers, and timers help individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) live more independently.

How Can You Access KenCrest’s Enabling Technology Program?

KenCrest can assist anyone with an intellectual or developmental disability, as well as those 65 years and older, in finding devices to help them live more independently. The process begins with a conversation to understand each individual's needs. The Enabling Technology team then identifies the right solutions from a variety of off-the-shelf devices and tools.

How Can Enabling Technology Help Me At Work?

KenCrest supports individuals with IDD in their professional journeys, whether they are re-entering the workforce or starting a new career. The program helps with job interview preparation, resume reviews, and developing on-the-job skills. KenCrest’s Enabling Technology program provides devices and equipment to help individuals achieve their employment goals.

For example, KenCrest’s Project SEARCH team at Phoenixville Hospital helps interns transition from school to the working world. Through classroom lessons and on-site training, interns gain job skills, professional responsibility, self-advocacy, and effective communication.

Vinny, an intern, struggled with rolling wraps in the hospital kitchen. KenCrest introduced LifeSherpa, a cloud-based app that delivers content, reminders, and resources. A Skills Trainer recorded a chef rolling a wrap and created a step-by-step guide for Vinny. With this tool, Vinny learned to roll wraps successfully.

Another intern, Lily, often got lost navigating the hospital. Using LifeSherpa, an assistive technology app, she created navigational tasks to guide her from point A to point B. Over time, she learned her way around independently.

What Can Enabling Technology Help Me With at Home?

For many individuals with IDD, daily tasks like turning on lights or cooking can be challenging. KenCrest’s Enabling Technology department offers solutions to make these tasks easier.

One individual struggled with showering independently, often forgetting steps and needing staff assistance. KenCrest introduced an Amazon Echo Dot to guide him through the process, allowing him to shower on his own. This tool restored his autonomy and dignity.

Patricia McLean, a wheelchair user, moved into her first apartment with KenCrest’s support. She received Enabling Technology devices like a Roomba vacuum and ADA-compliant counters, enabling her to cook and clean independently. An app on her phone allows her to control lights and open doors automatically. These technologies transformed her living experience, giving her the independence she longed for.

KenCrest’s Enabling Technology department is dedicated to helping individuals with IDD live more independently by providing innovative solutions tailored to their needs. Whether it’s through smart home devices or personalized apps, KenCrest ensures that those they support can thrive both at home and in the community.
