For over a century, KenCrest has been dedicated to supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Founded in 1905 by Sister Maria Roeck and Rev. August Fischer, KenCrest began as a response to the tuberculosis epidemic in Kensington, Pennsylvania.
Over the years, our mission has evolved to focus on empowering individuals with disabilities to lead meaningful, independent lives. Our community support programs are a testament to this commitment, providing comprehensive services that cater to the unique needs of each person we support.
Community support programs play a crucial role in fostering inclusion and promoting the well-being of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. These programs provide essential services that help individuals build skills, gain independence, and connect with their communities. By offering tailored support, we can ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive and lead a fulfilling life.
What community support programs does KenCrest offer?
Meaningful Day Community Engagement
Our Meaningful Day Community Engagement program is all about helping individuals participate in activities that bring joy and purpose to their lives. Whether it's through in-home support, community participation, or respite services, we strive to create opportunities for personal growth and social connection. Participants can engage in hobbies, attend classes, and explore their interests, all while building valuable life skills.
One heartwarming story from our Meaningful Day program involves Chucky and Logan, who found friendship and joy through weekly bowling sessions. With the guidance of their friend, Frank Munroe, they formed the "Beef Cake Bowlers" and have built up their social network while knocking down pins.
Clinical Services
KenCrest's Clinical Services provide essential support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our team of professionals offers a range of therapies, including behavioral, communication, and sexuality support. These services are tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual, ensuring they receive the care and guidance necessary to thrive in their communities.
Kelly Sanders, one of our dedicated Clinical Coordinators, has been instrumental in helping individuals navigate their unique challenges. With a background in social work and psychology, Kelly's passion for supporting those with different neurological and developmental needs has significantly impacted the lives of many individuals at KenCrest.
"It's incredibly fulfilling to see the progress our clients make,” says Kelly. “Every small step forward is a victory worth celebrating."
Employment Services
Finding meaningful employment is key to leading an independent and fulfilling life. KenCrest's Employment Services help individuals develop the skills they need to succeed in the workforce. From job training to digital networking and job placement assistance, we support individuals every step of the way. KenCrest aims to help each person we support find jobs they enjoy and excel in, fostering a sense of accomplishment and self-worth.
One inspiring story is that of Madison Fields, who, with the help of her KenCrest job coach, secured her first job as a cashier at Goodwill. The confidence and skills that she gained through tailored support have inspired Madison to pursue her dream of graduating college and helping others living with disabilities.
"I was really worried about counting money, but I feel like I’ve gotten way more confident in it,” says Madison. “You’re always going to have something you struggle with a little bit, but it’s gotten better, and I’ve learned different techniques to make change."
School to Career
Transitioning from school to a career can be challenging, but KenCrest is here to help. Our School to Career program bridges the gap between high school and adult employment services. We provide support and resources to help young adults navigate this critical transition, ensuring they are prepared for the next chapter of their lives. With guidance, each person we support can explore career options, gain valuable work experience, and build a foundation for future success.
KenCrest's School to Career program, especially through initiatives like Project SEARCH, has been instrumental in preparing young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities for successful employment. Project SEARCH is a one-year, on-site job training program that combines classroom instruction with practical job experience in a medical setting. This program has empowered many individuals to gain valuable skills and confidence. Participants like Vinny, Lily, Jake, and Sherry have thrived under this program which not only equips individuals with the necessary skills but also fosters a sense of independence and self-worth.
At KenCrest, we are committed to providing the highest quality of care and support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our community support programs are designed to empower individuals, promote independence, and enhance their overall quality of life. We invite you to explore our programs and see how we can make a difference together.
